Takayuki Matsumine is a contemporary artist born in Shizukuishi, Iwate Prefecture. At 16, he experienced a life-altering event that brought him to the brink of mortality, radically transforming his perception of everyday existence. This profound shift — rooted in his reliance on external support to sustain life — instilled in him a deeply singular lens through which he interprets relationships between people, nature, and technology.

Matsumine’s practice emerges from this duality: while his experiences serve as a wellspring of inspiration and vitality, they also immerse him in an ongoing dialogue with paradox. He grapples with the tensions between human agency and dependence, organic impermanence and technological intervention, and the fragile beauty of interconnectedness.

Through his work, Matsumine interrogates the aesthetic and existential dilemmas born from these entanglements. His art becomes a vessel for examining what it means to navigate — as both participant and observer — the fragile thresholds where individual will intersects with the forces that bind us to one another, to nature, and to the machines we create.
