CONTEXT

Michelangelo Buonarroti Simoni painted ‘The Creation of Adam’: a moment that the Almighty God gives intelligence and the living world itself to Adam who is the first mankind on the earth. We, human beings, have used intelligence fully given by the God, and produced and developed all kind of technologies so far. Human being created AI with intelligence given by the God. Moreover, AI might exceed our intellect sooner or later and would govern the whole planet. AI could be worshiped as a god and we are going to face the day that it would give us the world like the Almighty God did to Adam. What is the admirability of humanity which AI doesn’t have? or Where is the borderline between human being and AI?

CONTEXT

A humankind observed by aliens. If I was an alien, I would observe ‘humankind’ objectively and express something through my art work.

Humankind started going to war and hurting each other by using ‘1. Weapon’ beyond a knife, a handgun, a rifle, preying and self-defense. Moreover, the arms and weapons industry appeared to create money through madness called war.

They created ‘2. Nuclear Power Generation’ in order to satisfy their desires of being rich or improve their standard of living, but they saw the ego of technology by themselves with their own eyes. Human being has been developed culturally and continue to contaminate the earth.

They created ‘3. Law’. They needed to. They couldn’t keep in harmony without standard rules. An order was created and they all need to continue inquiring about it forever.

They created a system called, ‘4. Money’ and has deeply attached to it and suffered from it. During the 100 years of their longevity, they are fussy about how much money they make and distressed. They also created the concept of poverty and wealth.

What is that gleaming protein block? They carry the organ called, brain, in their heads and it consumes energy all through 24 hours and keeps thinking something. What is that bright shining organ for? It seems it is a special organ that human being has in order to create: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Are there any better ways to use these actions? I would like to look forward to their creativity.

CONTEXT

What would it be like when people cross their expressions with the others’?

We worked on an artistic collaboration with Kaito Nakata, a professional skateboarder. Matsumine spread out ‘Firecracker Painting’, which is his trademark painting method by taking advantage of the explosion of firecrackers, all over a canvas. He made a painting of supernova explosion through blasting firecrackers. The system of reincarnation that explosion creates a new planet resembles apoptosis. We feel the magnificent universe and the macrocosmic human cell in common, which have a fateful cycle that everything must come to an end in order to be renewed. The paint left its mark of explosion power which blasted unintentionally and even the tiniest paint can be found far from the center. All those tiny blasted dots on the canvas are too minute to be captured by a pixel digital camera. We considered what color we were going to explode with Kaito Nakata. After we finished ‘Firecracker Painting’, Kaito Nakata left wheel marks on canvas by jumping, kicking, and grinding with his skateboard. An artist and a skateboarder, the expression and power of two different genres were mixed on one canvas.

CONTEXT

A star flashes and twinkles after the explosion. Those stars scattered in the Galaxy repeat the cycle of reincarnation: explosion and birth. He spread out ‘Firecracker Painting’ by taking advantage of the explosion of firecrackers all over the canvas. He made a painting of supernova explosion through blasting firecrackers. The system of reincarnation that explosion creates a new planet resembles apoptosis. About 3,000 human cells die in a day and reproduced. He feels the magnificent universe and the macrocosmic human cell in common, which have a fateful cycle that everything must come to an end in order to be renewed. The paint left its mark of explosion power which blasted unintentionally and even the tiniest paint can be found far from the center. All those tiny blasted dots on the canvas is too minute to be captured by a pixel digital camera.

Explosion, death, and birth are in one united cycle. We shall never fear the death in order to be renewed. This is how human being is supposed to be and ordained by the universe.

I’ve collected several types of distinctive Japanese lacquer from Tohoku (northern east part of Japan) and painted them on this artwork several times.  I achieved in constructing multi-layers into the artwork by layering skull graphic designs in between the surface painting.

CONTEXT

The sensibility of Japanese people is not derived from innovation and reinvention, but derived from respect and preservation of subconscious awareness of culture.
Japanese people have fermented cultural thread blended by cultural influence from the West and other countries, as Japanese have carried on its unique culture from generation to generation.  Japanese traditional beauty called “Wabi-Sabi” lies in the core of this cultural fermentation.  This sophisticated virtue was taught by a famous tea master Sen No Rikiyu.  When the minimum quantity of “beauty” is installed in the simplest form of space without any waste, the consciousness of yin and yang in space start to unify and create inflection.  In the end, there is only the “essential beauty of sophistication” left out in the simplest form of the space.
Sophistication is a beauty which stands in stark contrast to innovation and reinvention.
Fate can be irrational but my tragic accident taught me a form of perception to aim for this sophisticated beauty by accepting the reality.  New seeds sprouted from my broken cervical spinal cord and my ruined fate is carrying on to next it’s stage by blooming flowers to reach for sophistication.

CONTEXT

My country Japan is a dependent nation.  I mean we lost the war so we couldn’t fight our destiny.  I can see ourselves as American soldiers in our national flag in some way.  Japan exists because of America.  America has been always stretching its body all over us.  I strongly hope that Japan will crawl up and turn things around or give out a ray of shining light from underneath America’s body.

CONTEXT

This is a fun piece of visual perception.  A mouse can be harmful but can be also a hero or an idol figure.  People tend not to construe things thoroughly and sometimes misinterpret the definition of coolness, beauty, or fear.  Plus they break down the component elements and extract only partial elements of the meaning.  We have a longing for one mouse but we are also blindfolded without understanding why we have a longing for it.

CONTEXT

Humans are lonely and melancholic creatures.  So am I.  I want to be with someone, want to be someone, and want to share my life with someone else.  So I hand out the key to share my life, the key opens the door to start a new beginning.  Life-turning moments that might become the key would appear in front of you or sometimes you have to go grab it by yourself.  There are some doors that should be opened and others that shouldn’t, but you wouldn’t know what would come out unless you open it.

CONTEXT

We are able to perceive many types of information hitting our body such as the sense of vision, hearing, and smelling.  We can process this information and identify what we see, hear or taste as beautiful, cute, ugly or scary by utilizing the combination of perception or influence of the contexts. The best part of being an artist is to grab the perception of viewers by selecting information of senses and finding out the right amount of balance to inspire others.  When I wake up in the morning, I sometimes get disgusted by having too much information of perception surrounding me.  Sometimes I get sick of doing an intense catch-ball of throwing each other’s information to get to know others more or get to know me more.  That’s why I chose to give a thought to the expression of Mr. Piet Mondrian who used the simplified form of lines and colors.  I decided to provide others the simplified form of telling who I am.

CONTEXT

You must know that the natural environment gets damaged or tainted as humans pursue for better lives and more beauty.  However, I cannot pay solicitude to nature and continue dumping chemical paints on my artworks to pursue the beauty.  There are two sides of the same coin that there is the one which gets better and one which gets damaged but as for the one which gets damaged, I can’t do anything about it.
